A Franklin County circuit judge has partially granted Governor Andy Beshear’s request for an injunction on three bills vetoed by the state legislature Tuesday concerning the governor’s executive orders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beshear filed a lawsuit Tuesday night against Republican legislative leaders in the state to block the bills from becoming law. Earlier Tuesday, both the state senate and house voted to override his vetoes of House Bill 1 and Senate Bills 1 and 2.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd said, “it is likely that hundreds, or even thousands, of individual operating plans, could be adopted, with no meaningful oversight or review. The judge added, “The Governor’s power to effectively enforce any uniform public health standards would be severely undermined, if not destroyed.”
Shepherd’s ruling only affects the part of House Bill 1 that deals with businesses and schools staying open during the pandemic. He said other parts of the bill still remain in effect.
