Hazardous Road Conditions In Caldwell And Lyon Counties

Roads conditions around Caldwell and Lyon counties are slick and hazardous Thursday morning causing several semis to be stranded on a stretch of Interstate 24.

Caldwell County Judge-Executive Larry Curling is reminding everyone that the county’s road crews have already been on the roads treating this morning and will continue throughout the winter weather and ice event. He also would like to remind everyone that if you see downed trees and debris in the roadway on secondary roads and for non-emergency situations to report and call 270-365-2041. For a tree or debris in the road on a curve or in a spot that is hidden to motorists, or if you have an emergency, call 911.

Princeton Mayor Kota Young reports roads are incredibly slick everywhere, even where they have been pre-treated. He says if you have to allow yourself extra time to get to your destination and drive slowly. If you don’t have to be out on the roads, he urges everyone to stay at home.

Caldwell County District 4 Magistrate Caldwell Co Magistrate Jeff Simms reports a little after 8:00 this morning that freezing drizzle has restarted at the Caldwell and Lyon County line on US 62. He says wind is also increasing causing some small limbs in secondary roadways.

According to Lyon County Sheriff Brent White, motorists should avoid traveling Interstate 24 between the 34-mile marker and the 46-mile marker eastbound and westbound. He reports there are semi’s stranded on that entire stretch of I-24 due to ice and they cannot get any traction and are just stuck and stationary.

Sheriff White also reports winds are gusting at times between 15-20 mph. He says Lyon county received some significant ice overnight, which ended a little after 3:00 this morning. He adds elevated concrete surfaces such as bridges and overpasses are very slick and hazardous, causing several wrecks, mainly on Interstate 24. He says many of the prison staff have gotten stuck in the roadway trying to get to work in Old Eddyville on KY 730 West.
