Bill Aimed At Reducing Life-Saving Drug Cost Heads To Governor’s Desk For Consideration

House Bill 95, a measure that addresses the skyrocketing cost of lifesaving medication, won final approval in the General Assembly this week and now heads to the governor’s desk. The measure, sponsored by Republican State Representative Danny Bentley of Russell, would cap the cost of insulin by mandating prescription insulin cost no more than $30 per thirty day supply.

Bentley said HB 95 sends a clear message that Kentuckians should have access to lifesaving medication. He added that this bill will save countless Kentucky lives once it becomes law. He also expressed his appreciation for the Senate’s willingness to reconsider their amendment and clear the way for a healthier Kentucky.

Legislators said the price cap would be in place regardless of the amount or type of insulin needed to meet the person’s insulin needs. The bill would also not prevent an insurer from setting the cost of insulin lower than $30.

The legislation now moves to Governor Andy Beshear’s desk for consideration with near-unanimous support from legislators.
