A Christian County judge denied the medical furlough for a Hopkinsville woman charged with a fatal shooting on Greenville Road in 2019.
Anshanique Leavell and her defense attorney, Michael Thompson, appeared before Chief Circuit Judge John Atkins Wednesday morning. Thompson asked Judge Atkins for the furlough while Leavell explained the medical issues she’s been having.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling said he had talked with jail medical staff. He added they alluded that Leavell had never mentioned the issues to them, and they were unaware of any reason she needed outside treatment.
Judge Atkins denied the medical furlough but gave Thompson a way to possibly allow Leavell to seek outside treatment.
Leavell’s case was originally scheduled to go to trial in September 2020 but was moved due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her new trial date is now for August 19 and 20.
Leavell is charged with murder, receiving stolen property – firearm, and complicity to tampering with physical evidence. She is accused of fatally shooting Armareya Freeman in the chest on the front porch of an apartment complex on Greenville Road shortly before midnight on June 6, 2019. Shortly after the shooting, Leavell was stopped by Hopkinsville police on Russellville Road at East 7th Street and was reportedly found to possess a stolen gun.
