Discussions centered around a road name change request were tabled during Monday’s Trigg County Fiscal Court meeting — regarding the potential flip of “Jackie Alexander Road” to the suggested “Lane Farm Road.”
Michael Lane, District 7 magistrate, was among five property owners to sign a petition for the name change originally drafted by Dustin Bradley Glass — also of the area — with the ultimate concern being the continued and consistent theft of the “Jackie Alexander Road” signage.
While the road itself isn’t considered a massive thoroughfare in Trigg County, the idea of a name change brought about several concerns and questions.
Trigg County Treasurer Lucy Oliver Kyler noted large amounts of money are annually doled out for sign replacement around the county — with safety and proper directions serving as the impetus.
Judge-Executive Hollis Alexander noted that “Stoney Road” continues to be the most-stolen sign in Trigg County — and by a wide margin — for its obvious reference to recreational marijuana use, and that theft across the area continues to be a problem.
District 1 Magistrate Mike Wright added there’s precedent in the county for an issue like this, involving Mershon’s Bridge and the John E. Woodruff Memorial Highway located on Kentucky 274, but that taking away an historic name for another is difficult water to tread.
District 6 Magistrate Larry Lawrence also referenced another unseen difficulty with a name change; how long would it take to remap the road for emergency medical services, dispatches and other organizations?
Alexander noted up to four months minimum.
In other meeting news:
- The TCFC voted unanimously to roll an incentives tax rebate of 90% over 10 years, pending the investment qualify, for the newly-announced PJ Clark Lumber Company coming to Cadiz. The decision comes after a public court discussion with Carter Hendricks and the Southwest Kentucky EDC.
- The TCFC also voted unanimously to procure the financial services of Stites & Harbison Law Firm and Compass Municipal Advisors at 0.75% each for the accurate and thorough guidance regarding the use of distributed funds from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
- Ted Martin was fully approved to the Barkley Lake Water District term — effective Jan. 1, 2021, through Dec. 31, 2024 — following the death of longtime local servant Tommy P’Pool. Wright abstained, due to familial conflict of interest, but gave a nod in confidence.
- And the TCFC voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a Kubota RTV 1140 for the Trigg County Rescue Squad, replacing a Kawasaki Mule. The RTV is valued at $15,793.48, and Alexander said the Mule “actually laid down and died” on the rescue squad the last time they went out to Turkey Creek.
