In honor of its longtime chaplain, Pennyroyal Hospice will be hosting its first-ever Reverend Lloyd Tucker Glo-Golf Classic 4-Man Scramble — set for the evening of September 24 at Western Hills Golf Course in Hopkinsville.
A Todd County native and graduate of Elkton High School, the 82-year-old Tucker died on June 25 in Owensboro following a short-term illness. A graduate of Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tennessee, and Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, Tucker spent the bulk of his career as pastor of Southside Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis for 25 years.
In 2001, Lloyd’s ministry and mission changed. He moved from “pastor” to “chaplain” at the headquarters of the Church of the Nazarene in Lenexa, Kansas, and from there returned to the area to serve as chaplain for Pennyroyal Hospice in Hopkinsville until his death.
Kelly Martin, Pennyroyal Hospice Executive Director, said naming a glow-golf tournament after Tucker made sense, because, like night-time golf, Tucker always brought light into darkness.
There’s another big reason why Martin and Pennyroyal Hospice are focusing on a golf tournament, as opposed to the typical “Tastes of the Pennyrile” festivities: COVID-19, and its most recent surge through the area.
For $300, teams of four can register up until the day of the classic, with tee and hole sponsorships available for $100. Each player on the team will receive a “goodie-bag” with a glowing golf ball the night of the tournament, with extra balls available for purchase and all proceeds going back to Pennyroyal Hospice.
A drink cart with soft drinks and adult beverages will be available, too, with donations allowing one to fill up on their drink of choice.
Western Hills Golf Course won’t be in complete darkness, as Martin said glow-sticks will light up different parts of the links.
First place and second place cash prizes will be awarded, as will a last-place, lost-the-most-balls effort be rewarded.
