Kentucky State Police are continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting that left the suspect dead in Hopkinsville Sunday afternoon.
Officials have not released the name of the man who was fatally shot by police Sunday evening.
Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner says an officer stopped to check on a man in a vehicle parked on the side of the road near South Main Street shortly before noon Sunday. During the stop, the driver was reportedly found to have active warrants out of Florida involving a DUI crash, with Sumner saying the driver fought with the officer then pointed a gun at him before fleeing into a vacant apartment.
Law enforcement blocked off several roads in the area and tried to make contact with the man to have him exit the building at the intersection of West 19th Street and South Main Street. Police then shot tear gas into the apartment.
Police say they found the suspect in the attic between two walls after a 6-hour standoff and used tear gas again. Sumner says the suspect then pointed a gun at officers, and officers fired shots.
Hopkinsville Police Chief Clayton Sumner says the officers involved in the shooting will not be working the streets right now, adding that it is normal for the investigation to be turned over to another agency.
Sumner says he is confident that officers did what they were supposed to do and followed the law.
A law enforcement K9 was reportedly injured after breathing in some broken glass but Sumner says the dog was given medical attention and is doing great.
Sumner says the suspect had driver’s licenses out of Florida and Tennessee.
No officers were injured in the shooting and Kentucky State Police have been called to investigate. The suspect’s name has not been released.
