Christian County Experiencing Record Number of COVID-19 Cases

Christian County is experiencing a record number of COVID-19 cases with nearly one-quarter of the new cases reported to the health department break-through cases.

Thursday’s update from the health department showed an increase of 835 cases from December 30, with 222 of the people who had been previously vaccinated. 130 of the cases or 15-percent are pediatric cases.

The number of active COVID cases in Christian County are now at 1,010 — the first time the active cases have topped 1,000. The previous high was 924 on January 13 of last year.

222 of the active cases are under 21 years of age and 143 are older than 60.

Jennie Stuart Medical Center reported 24 people hospitalized with COVID-19 Thursday, according to Marketing Director Chris Jung. He said that was actually down from earlier in the week. During the last COVID surge in September, the hospital had 38 COVID patients on September 12. A year ago, the record high was 42 in a single day.

The health department previously said they will not always be able to contact each positive individual to conduct a case interview, contact trace, or provide quarantine letters. Their priority will be to contact children under the age of 18 and adults age 65 and older.

The health department also reported three deaths linked to the coronavirus — a 64-year-old male, a 73-year-old male, and a 92-year-old male. All three were unvaccinated.
