Council To Consider Funding Request For New Road Off Lovers Lane

Hopkinsville City Council will consider a funding request from the Bruce Convention Center for the construction of a new road — Mike Foster Way — that will lead off of Lover’s Lane to the Sportsplex.

Convention Center Board Chairman Todd Morris said the total cost of the road construction project is $377,185. He pointed out that there are several properties around the proposed road that they hope are developed in the future.

click to download audioHe explained the contractor that originally had the low bid didn’t qualify, leaving a shortfall of another 10-grand.

click to download audioMorris noted the main thing is they want to get the road built. He said Christian County Fiscal Court has agreed to use some grant money toward the project, but he added the project is still short around $35,000.

click to download audioCouncilman Steve Keel said he is 100 percent in favor of constructing the road, but he would prefer the city put up $25,000 and Christian County Fiscal Court kick in more money since the county is using grant money and the funding is not directly coming out of the county’s pocket.

Councilman Terry Parker asked Mayor Wendell Lynch his thought’s on the matter. The mayor said he feels it’s a great benefit for the city, the Sportsplex, and that entire complex. He added the city can afford the roughly $36,000 by using discretionary funds.

click to download audioAfter more discussion and comments, Parker made a motion to forward a municipal order to the City Council authorizing the $35,885.20 to be paid out of the interfund account, and that they also request the county pay the remaining balance. The motion passed unanimously by an 8-0 vote with council members Kimberly McCarley, Tom Johnson, Patricia Waddell-Bell and Jason Bell absent from the meeting.

In other new business, city council will also consider a municipal order that the City of Hopkinsville opts to presume revenue loss of up to $10 million authorized by the Treasury Department for the receipt and use of the American Rescue Recovery Funds.
