Following Storms, Long-Term Recovery Group Forming In Christian County

A long-term recovery group is forming in Christian County, with hopes of uniting people with recovery sources following recent tornadoes.

According to Betsy Bond, executive director for the United Way of the Pennyrile, the people of Hopkinsville and its surrounding bergs have unmet needs from December and January twisters.

As such, a community meeting to form this group will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, in the Cornell Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Hopkinsville.

Jim Morse, conference disaster response coordinator with Connectional Ministries, will head the session.

LTRGs serve as cooperative bodies that are typically comprised of representatives from faith-based, non-profit, government, business, and other capable organizations within communities — who form a conglomerate to assist individuals and families while they recover from natural disasters.

The end goal for LTRGs is to glue recovery resources to the people who need them most.

This Christian County organization will be identifying both individuals and families with overt needs, providing case management in order to prioritize how those needs will be met. Delivering goods, services and funds will be part of this process, as well.

Those interested in being a part of this group — either by offering tangible resources, financial support, or physical effort — should attend this meeting to learn more.

This is not, however, a meeting for those who have been affected by the severe storms. This is for those who want to help satisfy the needs that currently exist. Bond said the goal is “not just to rebuild, but rather to rebuild stronger, and better than before.”
