The Hopkinsville Christian County Public Library is hosting a talk on “cryptids” at 5 o’clock this Monday.
What is a “cryptid,” you ask?
Dr. Kate Horigan, a professor of folklore at Western Kentucky University, will be presenting this program, which is based on the discussion of creatures unrecognizable by science. “Cryptids” are creatures like the Sasquatch, the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil and the Wendigo, in that they’re subjects of great myth, mystery and popular occult, but maybe can’t be explained.
Contrary to popular belief, “cryptids” do not have to be supernatural, mythical or even strange — but often are. It’s just that many of these popular creatures acquire these types of characteristics as their legends grow and balloon through tales.
This “cryptid” talk is part of the summer read program, which kicked off in June and runs until July 9. The hope of the program is to encourage students to continue reading throughout these off-months, and to provide various adults to engage adults in the exercise.
HCCPL Executive Director DeeAnna Sova noted that this is the type of out-of-the-box programming needed to keep summer reading “interesting and engaging,” and Dr. Horigan’s visit is made possible through sponsor Planters Bank.
Participants for the summer read program can still sign up and earn points, win prizes and attend events until its July completion.
