Mayor Youth Council Returning To Hopkinsville

The Sixth Mayor’s “Youth Council” — typically dubbed “MYCity” — is making its return in Hopkinsville.

All interested Christian County juniors and seniors, whether they’re schooled at home or in public/private institutions, are encouraged to apply.

Current Mayor Wendell Lynch noted the “best start” is a “head start,” and that up to 25 emerging leaders will be selected for the group.

The council offers young people a chance to address issues that affect the community in a variety of ways, while providing a podium for youth-centered solutions and ideas in local government. The program also gives leeway for students to sharpen leadership skills and hone a spirit of volunteerism.

Applicants must be attending school inside Christian County, be entering their junior/senior year by the fall of 2022 and be available and committed to attending and participating in nine specific sessions.

This year’s deadline is Friday, September 16. Applications can be found online at hoptown.org/mycity, and should include a list of the student’s information, a 300-to-500 word essay, two letters of recommendation, a signed participant release form and a headshot.

All application finalists could be offered a personal interview, that will be conducted between September 28-30. All “MYCity” selections will be sent notice by October 5. A mandatory orientation takes place October 19.

Formed in the fall of 2015, the MYCity operates as a student advisory group, and often comes with interactive experiences to learn about Hopkinsville City Council, administrative department heads, supervisors and community leaders.
