A possible plea could be on the way from the defense of Machaela Carpinet, who is charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Roaring Springs man John Brandon.
During Wednesday’s pretrial conference in Trigg County Circuit Court, Attorney Cody Hooks said he and his client may have an agreement with the Commonwealth’s Office set in stone by December.
In the case of failed negotiations, however, Hooks, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jill Giordano and Judge Jamus Redd agreed on a two-day trial window for February 23 & 24 of next year.
Furthermore, Giordano noted all discovery had been provided to defense counsel, and requested Carpinet be removed from her ankle monitor — with which the defendant has been compliant through the birth of a child.
With the ankle monitor removed, Carpinet no longer accrues time served in the event of a plea deal or a guilty verdict and its subsequent sentencing. She does remain out on $750,000 bond.
Alongside the manslaughter charge, she’s also charged with DUI in a motor vehicle, no registration plates, no Kentucky registration receipts, no driver’s license, failure to maintain required insurance, failure to wear a seatbelt, failure to notify a change of address to the Department of Transportation and driving too fast for traffic conditions.
Another pretrial conference for Carpinet was set for 11 AM, December 14.
