Snow Forces KYTC Response In West Kentucky

Crews from Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 did send out trucks on several roads Saturday morning and afternoon, as an early-season snow event exceeding overnight snowfall expectations forced response.

Snowfighters spread salt in Crittenden and Livingston counties, where a surprising three inches of snow fell mainly north of U.S. 60 along the Ohio River.

Several counties across the region also reported two-plus inches of snow, trailing off to nearly one inch for counties along the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.

By midday, most of the snow had melted — but cold Saturday evening temperatures were also expected, making the work even more of a priority.

Ballard and Carlisle counties also had trucks on the road moving slush, treating bridges and overpasses.

KYTC officials noted that “unseasonably warm temperatures” from earlier this week kept pavement as warm as 65 degrees, reducing accumulations. However, some areas where snow forecasts were outpaced did have reported slick spots — which did cause some mild traffic issues.

For those traveling northward into Illinois and the St. Louis area over the next day or two, caution is advised, as that area received nearly six inches of snow in the overnight and early Saturday morning hours.

More small accumulations of snow have been forecasted for late Monday night and early Tuesday morning in west Kentucky.
