According to spokesman Keith Todd, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 crews ramped down snow-fighting efforts around 4 PM Saturday — having battled 35 mile-per-hour winds, low temperatures and a minus-30 wind chill for most of the afternoon.
All District 1 crews made a final pass, spreading salt where needed on “C” snow routes before halting work before sundown.
The extreme cold has limited the impact of salt and other ice-fighting chemicals, but temperatures in and around 20 degrees — coupled with abundant sunshine — did help activate salt and generate some melting.
That melting, however, will refreeze.
Interstates, parkways, U.S. highways and other four-lanes (“A” routes) are considered 95% cleared. Most side routes are roughly 70-to-90% cleared, and the smallest routes are between 45-and-75% cleared.
Motorists are advised to continue to slow down and use appropriate caution — particularly on those “C” routes where slick spots and black ice remain.
Tonight’s low will be less than 10 degrees.
