An east-central Kentucky county attorney is among the Republican candidates seeking to win the May Primary Election in order to run for the state treasurer position this year.
Mark Metcalf, who currently serves as Garrard County Attorney, has held that position off and on for over 22 years. He also completed 29 years in the Kentucky Army National Guard, representing every major command in the Commonwealth.
In a visit with Your News Edge, Metcalf says he has practiced law for most of his life as a private practitioner, state and federal prosecutor, and a judge on the US Immigration Court in Miami, Florida.
Metcalf adds he understands rural communities and the role they play in Kentucky.
His campaign is focusing on three main points, the first is remembering that the state’s money is taxpayer dollars.
Another key point is making sure that the state’s pension is being funded correctly and returns are being given back to those who are a part of the program.
The last point is ensuring that unclaimed property money is returned back to state residents.
Metcalf says there is over $200 million of unclaimed property funds to be distributed.
Republican State Treasurer Alison Ball has completed her two terms and is now running for the state’s auditor position.
Metcalf faces Andrew Cooperrider and OJ Oleka in the May Primary Election. Democrat candidate Michael Bowman will face whoever wins the primary, in November.
Bowman lost to Ball in 2019, receiving just 39 percent of the over 1.4 million votes cast.
