Marcella “Marcie” Simmons, 94, of Duluth, GA formerly of Hopkinsville, KY died Wednesday morning, August 9, 2023, at MeSun Hospice in Lawrenceville, GA following a brief illness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Reverend Father Emmanuel Udoh officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at the church. Hughart, Beard & Giles Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
A native of Perham, MN she was born June 19, 1929, the daughter of the late Servatius and Rose Doll Strecker. She retired in 1997 after 25 years as a department manager for Montgomery Ward/Harveys/Peebles. She was a longtime member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church. While at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Marcie was active in St. Vincent DePaul, Silver Streaks, and the bereavement committee. She was currently a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Johns Creek, GA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Eugene Simmons; and her sisters: Bernice Strecker and Dorothy Strecker Young Gooding.
Survivors include her children: Steven Simmons of Avondale Estates, GA, Denise Simmons Vandergrift of Lawrenceville, GA, and Michele Simmons of Duluth, GA; grandchildren: Benjamin (Kirstie) Simmons of Roswell, GA, Joshua (Karina) Vandergrift of Huntsville, AL, Maggie (Branden) Shelton of Chapmansboro, TN, Christian Baumgarth of Duluth, GA, and William Baumgarth of Duluth, GA; and her great-grandchildren: Michael Grider, Lily Grider, Olivia Vandergrift and Parker Simmons.
