Gilstrap Sentened to 12 Years in Parental Death and Neglect Case

An Oak Grove man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday for his role in the neglect and eventual death of his father over 14 months ago.

Christian County Circuit Judge Andrew Self handed down the sentence, which comes a month after Gilstrap and his attorney Renae Tuck of Eddyville mediated a guilty plea instead of going to trial.

Gilstrap pled guilty to amended charges of wanton abuse, wanton exploitation of an adult, and eight counts of animal cruelty. He also saw his murder charge amended to reckless homicide.

Gilstrap and his girlfriend Ann Harrison were charged with murder, first-degree criminal abuse, and several other charges in connection to the death of Anthony Gilstrap, Sr. The Oak Grove Police Department investigation said the elder Gilstrap was taken to the hospital on July 10, 2022, and was reportedly unresponsive with signs of severe neglect.

The police investigation also revealed the couple had put themselves as power of attorney over the man’s banking account and removed money from his account as well as started a life insurance policy for him.

Tuck told the court that Gilstrap had already served 13 months in the county jail and felt that punishment would suffice along with a probated sentence for her client.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen said Harrison has declined a mediation offer and wishes to go to trial on her charges.

Judge Self said a trial for Gilstrap removes the chance to learn all of the facts in the case.
