Brian Johnson, and his family, need a lift. And Trigg Countians are preparing to give it.
Beginning at 8 AM Saturday at the Trigg County Recreation Complex, the “Brian’s Journey Benefit” will rally around a beloved Cadiz man and former Wildcat — who, for the past two years, has battled cancer alongside his wife and two children while residing near Jacksonville, Florida.
Lauren Fowler, Trigg County PVA, is a cousin of Johnson’s, and she recently shared that Shell Malone helped formulate the idea of a softball tournament to raise support funds and awareness — while having a good time.
Softball, Fowler said, is only part of the fun that’s been planned for the day.
Fowler also noted that the Trigg County Recreation Complex was beyond fitting for a gathering about Johnson.
It’s a familiar, and familial, place to be — especially near the concession stand.
Even with the weekend and the big day quickly approaching, Fowler said community members can still find a way to pinch in through this process.

In a Facebook update posted earlier this week, Malone said those committed to making desserts can drop them off at the Complex at 8 AM Saturday, or that she can be met sometime Friday. She said they don’t have to be cakes, but can also include fried pies, breads or whatever one’s specialty may be. Individual wrapped treats, like cookies and brownies and Rice Krispie squares, will also be accepted.
There’s still a full list of concession items needed, too, and auction items are still being taken.
Furthermore, a “Brian’s Journey” GoFundMe online donation drive is well underway, courtesy of Peggy McDermott. As of Thursday afternoon, it had reached more than $59,000 of a $60,000 goal. And on this page, McDermott indicated a “heartbreaking prognosis,” and that all treatment options have been “exhausted.”
Johnson himself recently took to Facebook, offering up an emotional update.
A long-time employee of Regency Centers and previously at GBT in Nashville, Johnson was a multi-sport star during his time at Trigg County. He is the son of Corky and Lanie, and the brother of Patrick — whose family also resides close to Jacksonville, Florida.
