Officials with Austin Peay State University and the City of Clarksville have announced a joint environmental stewardship through the “Healthy Yards” Program — where citizens can order from the 4th Annual Native Plant Sale all up until April 27.
Wes Powell, Austin Peay’s director of Landscape and Grounds, said there are 69 species of native perennials, grasses, trees and shrubs up for purchase — including 20 new species and more than 1,600 individual plants.
Powell noted that using natives is “one of the fastest-growing trends in the landscaping industry” because people are seeing the benefits with their own eyes.
And according to Powell, some of those advantages include:
Aesthetics and longevity: Because native flowers have a wide range of colors, textures and forms that can capture interest for multiple seasons.
Low maintenance: Because native plants require less overall maintenance than other plants, which reduces the need for irrigation, pesticides, fertilizer and mowing.
Adaptability: Because native plants tolerate a wide range of light, soil, temperature and moisture requirements.
And Wildlife benefits: Because native plants provide food and shelter for many insects, birds, amphibians and small mammals throughout the growing season, creating a more sustainable habitat.
Each one was grown at Austin Peay, and individuals can browse and purchase their favorites online here.
Where to order, pick up plants
The Native Plant Sale only accepts online orders, and all proceeds benefit Austin Peay’s Arboretum Fund of Excellence to help maintain and expand the campus arboretum.
Anyone who purchases a native plant during the sale will be able to pick up their order from 9 AM until 4 PM April 26, or 9 AM until to noon April 27 from the campus parking lot at the corner of Eighth and Farris streets.
Landscape and Grounds will post signage to help direct people to the pickup location.
