Two Sunday Morning Tornadoes Confirmed In Trigg County

The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes touched down in southern Trigg County during Sunday morning’s round of severe weather.

Storm surveys conducted by weather officials were released by the weather service on Wednesday.

The first tornado touched down around 8:50 Sunday morning five miles southeast of Canton just south of Donaldson Creek Road. The tornado lifted about seven miles south of Cadiz, around the South Road, six minutes later.

The damage was rated EF-1 with top winds of 95 MPH. The tornado traveled a path of six miles and was 70 yards in width. There were no injuries reported from that storm which caused mainly tree damage, with many large limbs down and a few trees uprooted.

The second tornado touched down approximately three minutes later about nine miles southeast of Cadiz near New Hope Road. The EF-2 tornado, with peak winds of 115 MPH, remained on the ground for 19 miles and ended at 9:14 AM just northwest of Pembroke in Christian County. No injuries were reported in this tornado – which crossed I-24, the Pennyrile Parkway, and Fort Campbell Boulevard.

The EF-2 tornado caused damage to numerous homes due to downed trees. Two homes were directly impacted due to tornadic winds which caused roof damage. Many trees were snapped or uprooted and several farm buildings were also damaged.

This tornado also caused significant damage in the area of the PeeDee Substation and Binns Mill Road, which serves Pennyrile Electric members in southern Trigg and Christian counties.

According to the National Weather Service database, it’s the first time since January 11, 2020, that two tornadoes struck Trigg County on the same day. An EF-1 tornado was reported that day near Fenton in Land Between the Lakes and an EF-0 hit Canton near Blue Springs Road.

The last EF-2 tornado to hit Trigg County since 1950 was on October 18, 2007, four miles northeast of Linton when two barns and a large garage were destroyed and four power poles snapped. Peak winds in that storm were estimated at 120 mph.
