Passersby and locals may have noticed the rows of “Stars & Stripes” starting to go up along the Blue Star Memorial Gardens in Cadiz — there at the corner of Main Street and U.S. 68, in front of Hancock’s Neighborhood Market.

It’s time, once again, for American Legion Post 74’s “Field of Flags,” which opened Friday morning and will run until Thursday, July 4.

According to officials, flags in memory of veteran friends and family can be purchased during this stretch — and they will be available for pickup during hours of operation after July 7 at the John L. Street Library.

Several will gather for a closing service, in which the flags will be folded and appropriately retired — where they can be stored or flown at home.

Those interested are invited to come out and purchase a flag at any time someone from the American Legion Post 74 is there, sitting out under the tree.

Furthermore, the auxiliary is always looking for new members.

Formed on January 18, 1920, it was incorporated under the laws of Kentucky when 16 ex-soldiers organized the group, and Bentley Piercy was elected its commander.

In the last century, the collective has provided needed and beneficial services to Trigg County citizens — helping veterans, donating toward the hospital construction fund, giving the hospital construction fund, giving scholarships to students, erecting a memorial marker for veterans, providing medical aid such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, and have sponsored countless sports teams for youth.

At one time, they also had control of the local swimming pool and ran a movie theater in Cadiz.
