TVA is reporting a peak power demand this week as the region suffered from extremely hot temperatures that topped near the 100-degree mark on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
The Tennessee Valley Authority reported this summer’s highest peak power demand of 31,096 megawatts was reached Thursday, August 29th, at 3:00 central time. The highest all-time summer peak power demand of 33,482 megawatts was reached on August 16, 2007.
In June, TVA experienced 13 total days with a daily peak of over 28,000 megawatts including a seven-day consecutive streak. For context, based on the last 10 years, it is typical for TVA to experience an average of around three total days over 28,000 megawatts in June.
TVA Senior Vice President of Operations Aaron Melda says the agency started summer preparations this spring, learning from the record power loads set during Winter Storm Heather last January. Melda says TVA invested in 75 major reliability projects at coal, gas, and hydro units this spring to make sure the agency was ready for summer.
