Elections can bring out the most negative of connotations, especially when local races are in play.
During Tuesday’s Christian County Fiscal Court meeting, however, County Clerk Melinda Humphries said last week’s efforts in and around Hopkinsville were “anything but” — calling it a “successful election.”
More than 21,000 ballots were cast in support of local, regional, state and national candidates, and last Thursday’s audit of a singular machine went through without hitch.
She noted it was good to share these things for transparency, and so that the voters of Christian County know that the tabulations are correct, the ballots were effective, and that citizens can truly vote anywhere and have their decisions matter.
She also said last week’s efforts required help from many.
In other fiscal court news:
— Magistrate John Bruce said that humanitarian efforts from Hopkinsville to Hurricane Helene’s wake in east Tennessee and North Carolina haven’t fully concluded, but to this point have amounted to more than 20 flights, 9,000 pounds of supplies and more than $6,000 in cash donations.
— Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam said that he was extremely pleased with the “outstanding turnout” from Saturday’s Veterans Day Parade in Hopkinsville, which just concluded its 25th year as part of the community calendar.
Former Mayor and Magistrate Rich Leibe said the turnout mattered.
— No action was taken, but the court did go into executive session, for discussions between a public agency and a representative of a business entity, concerning a specific proposal, if open discussions would jeopardize the siting, retention, expansion, or upgrading of the said business.
