The Next Giant Leap: Lunar Quilt Block Challenge was themed around NASA’s Artemis campaign, and required competitors to design a quilt block surrounding this theme.
The challenge received over 250 applicants from across the United States; only one entry from each state would become a finalist and be featured in the final quilt. Trigg County 4-H member 17-year-old Jessara Crenshaw received an exciting email last Friday, informing her that her entry was selected.
Crenshaw found the challenge through astronaut and quilter Karen Nyberg. In April, Nyberg had a previous Star Block Challenge quilt displayed at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah. Crenshaw was in awe that so many quilters from different locations joined together to create an amazing piece of art.
Soon after, Crenshaw found out that Nyberg was hosting the Block Challenge for a second time. She jumped on the opportunity, quickly starting on her entry.
Crenshaw spent over 15 hours on her quilt block. That time included drawing the pattern, sewing, and embellishing. Crenshaw’s biggest supporter? Her mom Jessica served as a listening ear for ideas throughout the process. In addition, her mom spent multiple nights awake during late hours to support her daughter as she worked.
The completed quilt with Crenshaw’s block will soon be displayed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Seeing the art in person would be an unforgettable experience for Crenshaw.
Crenshaw and her family hope to have this opportunity. To donate towards her trip to DC, visit the “Just Jessara” Facebook page.
