As the region enters the postseason for winter sports, and ramps up for the swing of spring, officials with Christian County Public Schools have one key subject on their mind.

Sportsmanship.

In a letter released by the district’s Director of Communications Johnna Brown, she and other leaders are imploring the roles people play as fans — but especially ones of Christian County and Hopkinsville sports.

Energy and passion are what drive fan bases, she said, but they are asking for commentary to reflect encouragement and support — not criticism or negativity — because the way one conducts themselves at games, and in online forums, impacts not only the teams, but also the coaches, the officials, and the visiting fans.

As such, keep these guidelines in mind for all the district’s athletic events:

% Only event personnel, officials, coaches and participating players are allowed on competition floors. Fans should remain in the stands until the game has officially concluded.

% Fans should show respect for all teams, players, coaches and their fans.

% Fans should also bring energy, and fill venues with excitement and pride.

District officials remain committed to maintaining safe, controlled, welcome environments at all athletic events. Any misconduct toward officials, coaches, players and/or opposing fans come with a “zero tolerance” policy, and may result in one’s removal from events, and/or suspension from future district games.

Furthermore:

+ Everyone in attendance — including all students, fans, spectators, and media members — will pass through a weapons detection system before entering facilities.

+ There are no bags permitted on any premises, though exceptions may be made for small diaper bags and medical implements.

+ Children younger than high school age must be accompanied by an adult who will remain with them during the event, and if left unsupervised, students will be denied access to the facility and a parent will be called to retrieve them.
