The Anne P. Baker Gallery presents “Continent to Commonwealth: Asian/Asian American Kentucky Art,” a traveling exhibit by the Kentucky Arts Council, October 2 through October 30, 2023.
This exhibit debuted at the Kentucky State Capitol Rotunda in May 2023, during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and is scheduled to travel statewide through May 2024. Madisonville is one of ten locations outside Frankfort selected to display “Continent to Commonwealth.” The pieces featured in the exhibit were selected by a panel of Asian and Asian American cultural specialists after the Kentucky Arts Council’s call for visual art resulted in entries from dozens of artists with ethnic identities including Korean, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian, Vietnamese and Karen, an ethnic group connected with the land now known as Myanmar, formerly Burma.
Based on the U.S. Census of 2020, there are 108,000 Kentuckians with Asian and Pacific Islander identities. According to the Kentucky Arts Council website, the purpose of the exhibit “is to share AAPI experiences in the commonwealth today, and recognize the artistic expressions that Asian individuals, families and communities contribute to Kentucky’s cultural landscape.”
The Anne P. Baker Gallery is located inside the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts on the campus of Madisonville Community College. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours on Glema Center event days. Gallery admission is free. For more information regarding this exhibit visit GlemaCenter.org or contact Toby Roberts at 270-821-2787 or Toby.Roberts@kctcs.edu.
