Dr. Michael (Mike) Conver, 81, died January 27, 2024, in Kentucky with family by his side. Mike was born in Peoria, Illinois, to Samuel Willis and Sara Jane Conver.
He is survived by his sons Jim of Las Vegas, NV. and Scott (Beth) of Seattle, WA., granddaughters Eliana and Emilia, sisters Ann and Kath, sister-in-law Bev, niece Sayshan, nephew Cal, and their families. He was preceded in death by his brother Lee, earlier this month, presumably to set up the bar in preparation for Mike’s arrival.
He graduated from St. Cecilia School and Spalding Institute and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Bradley University. He obtained teaching credentials, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, and a Ph.D. in educational administration from Illinois State University. Several years ago, the College of Education at ISU honored him with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.
He taught junior high science for many years in Peoria before becoming a principal, and then a superintendent in Crest Hill, Illinois.
He was a Boy Scout leader for many years, and a U.S Air Force and Illinois Air National Guard veteran.
Upon retiring he moved to Cadiz, Kentucky to a home on Lake Barkley. There he enjoyed boating and hosting family gatherings. He was active with the Cadiz Rotary Club, serving as its president for a year. He spent many hours tutoring first grade students at Trigg County Primary School where he was known as “Dr. C.”
He was the dad who had to keep an open tab at local emergency rooms to tend to wounds and breaks that were the result of his young son’s “adventures”. Family dinners with the boys were important to him, so that interrupted by a ringing telephone, he could be counted on to shout “it’s *** *** dinner time!” Later in life, he relished a trip to Ireland with his sons and other family members.
He perfected the role of big brother rescuing his younger siblings from various predicaments throughout life. Even when the three “little kids” just a few years ago overturned his jet ski in Lake Barkley, seeing a problem from the faraway shore, he hurriedly revved up the boat and charged forth to save the day. He was a bit chagrined to find the three had “righted the ship” and continued their ride. All four would laugh about the mishap the rest of the day.
Dr. Conver will be interred with military honors in a private service at Peal’s Chapel Cemetery on Parkview Shores Road in Cadiz. Friends of all ages will be invited to a celebration of his life at a later date.
